Off-Duty Niskayuna Firefighter Saves Life

23rd October 2006

A Scotia woman may not be alive if it was not for the heroic action of an off-duty Niskayuna firefighter.

Scott Briggs woke up to a car horn Monday morning. When he looked outside, his neighbor’s apartment building at 110 North Ballston was on fire.

Briggs entered the back of the building and crawled around the second floor. When he realized no one was up there, he came back out and broke into a separate entrance on the first floor, waking up 75-year-old Connie Remscheid, who was in her bedroom asleep.

“She had woken up and heard me screaming and breaking her windows,” says Briggs. “She thought I was trying to rob her.”

“I think if he didn’t do what he did, it could have been a pretty bad situation,” Scotia Fire Chief Richard Kasko says. “(It) could have been pretty grim.”

Remscheid’s son says his mother is fine and very grateful to Briggs for saving her life.

Investigators believe the fire is accidental and are currently looking to help the five people who lived in the three apartments.

Scott Briggs is a Paramedic with Moreau Emergency Squad.
